Long Span Bridges of Turkey

The high rise structures have been measured by their height that can reach up to almost 1000 meters while the bridges can be couple of 1000 meters long by providing multiple short spans that can be constructed by use of slab on precast beams.  In bridge design, the real challenge is to span the length with use of certain type of structure at once.  The bridgeshaving span lengths more than 200 meters are typically classified as special bridges that require special design and construction methods.

Cable-stayed bridges and suspension bridges are the most common type of special bridges known to engineers in practice.  Following general description of design and construction methods pertaining to these types of bridges, detailed information about the 1st Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet suspension bridges   built around 1970’s and 1980’s will bepresented.  In the second half of the presentation, the focus will be given to the sustainability and effective use of resources with examples.
